The clear aligners, which have been used in the world for more than 10 years, have been widely used in Turkey in the last 3-5 years. A decade ago, people who had crooked would not favor orthodontic treatment. The biggest factor in this situation was that the only orthodontic method known at that time was standard metal brackets and braces. Metal braces, which are still preferred by dentists and give very successful results, cause reservations for adult patients due to aesthetic concerns. For this reason, porcelain brackets have been used as an alternative to metal brackets for many years. In the last few years, clear aligners, which is a popular treatment method abroad, have become widespread in Turkey.

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners, also referred to as Invisalign, is, in its simplest definition, an orthodontic treatment in which teeth are corrected with transparent aligners instead of braces. The clear aligners not noticeable when viewed from a distance; the other person can only notice them at speaking distance.

Clear aligner treatment is a practical method that can be used at all ages. Especially people who do not have large gaps between their teeth but have deformities in the general tooth alignment are the most suitable candidates for this treatment. This method may not be suitable for patients with very severe dental impairment due to jaw structure. Your teeth measurements are taken first and your aligners are started to be prepared if your orthodontist finds your tooth structure suitable for clear aligners. Since the tooth sizes and shapes of each patient are different, the patient's dental mold is removed before the treatment and special aligners are prepared. Clear aligners are not fixed unlike other orthodontic methods; you can remove them for a few hours while brushing your teeth and doing your oral care, eating, or even on special occasions if you wish. Clear aligners are prepared in sets and each is used for up to 2 weeks.

Clear aligners have become a popular treatment method in a short time because they exhibit an aesthetic appearance and do not cause any difficulties in terms of oral care. The only disadvantage is the longer treatment time. Since the standard braces are fixed on the teeth, the treatment time is a little shorter, while this time is prolonged in the clear aligners treatment. Clear aligners should be worn for at least 20 hours during the day. If they are not used regularly, the treatment period will inevitably be prolonged, and effective results cannot be obtained.
