What Are the Types of Gum Diseases?

The branch of science which deals with the tissues around the tooth is called ‘’periodontology’’ and the diseases that occur in these tissues are called ‘’periodontal diseases’’. Periodontal diseases can be easily treated at early stages. However, if the chance of early treatment is missed, gum diseases appear as one of the most common reasons of tooth loss in adults.

Gum diseases are divided into three main groups as gingivitis, periodontitis and aggressive periodontitis. Gingivitis is the most common gum disease. The main symptoms of gingivitis are dark red, swollen and easily bleeding gums. It occurs due to the bacteria that accumulate on the gums. Most people think tooth brushing is enough for proper dental care, whereas you need to gently brush your gums as well to prevent gingivitis or bacterial plaques.

Periodontitis is mostly seen in adult patients. It is difficult to diagnose periodontitis at an early stage since it develops slowly and has no specific symptoms other than basic indications like gum bleeding or bad breath, etc. It is a more advanced level of periodontal disease and that doesn’t only damage the gums but also the tooth tissues that support the gum. Progression of periodontitis may cause gum recession and severe teeth loss in the future.

Aggressive periodontitis is a more severe gum disease that occurs at an early age. Aggressive periodontitis, which is a genetically inherited disorder, can be treated with early diagnosis.

Gum diseases can occur due to many factors. However, the main reasons include smoking, stress, unbalanced diet, genetic factors, diabetes, pregnancy or medications. Remember that you should take serious your oral and dental care in order to prevent the growth of bacteria on and around the gums. Hygiene is the best friend of dental health.
